Magic: The Gathering Reserved List — What Every Collector Should Know

The Reserved List is Magic's most controversial policy. We explain what it is, why it matters for collectors, and which cards are worth holding.

If you're new to Magic: The Gathering as a collectible, the Reserved List is the single most important policy to understand. It's the reason a Black Lotus can sell for $20,000+ in played condition and why certain 1993–1999 cards will never be reprinted at any price.

What Is the Reserved List?

In 1996, Wizards of the Coast made a formal promise to collectors: certain cards from early sets would never be reprinted in their original form. This promise was made to protect collectors who had invested in these cards under the assumption of scarcity. The list covers all Power Nine cards plus hundreds of others from Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised, and sets through Urza's Saga.

Wizards has reaffirmed this commitment multiple times, most recently under Hasbro ownership. While there have been discussions about modifying or eliminating the list, every such discussion has been walked back publicly. For practical purposes, collectors can treat the Reserved List as permanent.

The Power Nine

The Power Nine are the nine most powerful and valuable Magic cards ever printed: Black Lotus, Mox Pearl, Mox Sapphire, Mox Jet, Mox Ruby, Mox Emerald, Time Walk, Ancestral Recall, and Timetwister. All are Reserved List. All were printed only in Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited sets (1993). Timetwister is sometimes considered separately due to lower power level and price.

  • Black Lotus (Alpha) — the most iconic card in existence. PSA 9 Alpha copies trade above $100,000. Even heavily played copies command $15,000–$25,000.
  • Mox Sapphire / Mox Jet — typically the most expensive Moxen, especially in Alpha/Beta. Beta NM copies trade at $5,000–$15,000 depending on grade.
  • Time Walk / Ancestral Recall — underrated relative to Lotus and Moxen. Alpha PSA 9 Ancestral Recalls have sold above $50,000.

Reserved List Cards Below $500 Worth Holding

You don't need Power Nine money to invest in the Reserved List. Hundreds of cards are on the list and trade below $100 raw. Some to consider:

  • The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale (Legends) — Legacy staple, $2,000+ in NM, but even HP copies hold value.
  • Gaea's Cradle (Urza's Saga) — $500–800 NM, high liquidity, played in Commander globally.
  • Gilded Drake (Urza's Saga) — Commander staple around $150–200 NM, strong hold.
  • Yawgmoth's Bargain (Urza's Destiny) — under the radar, around $30–60 NM, Reserved List with Commander applications.
