Disney Lorcana: Worth Investing In or Overhyped?
Lorcana launched with enormous hype. Two years in, we look at which sets have appreciated, which haven't, and what the pattern tells us.
Disney Lorcana launched in 2023 with a level of hype rarely seen in the TCG industry. Licensed by Ravensburger and backed by one of the most recognizable IP portfolios in history, it sold out everywhere. Two years in, the picture is more nuanced.
What Has Held Value
The First Chapter sealed product has appreciated meaningfully. A booster box that retailed for $130 trades at $180–$250 today depending on condition and seller. The key reason: Ravensburger ran a relatively conservative print run for the first set, and collector demand for sealed first-edition product in any TCG tends to be durable.
Enchanted rarity singles (the game's equivalent of alternate arts / chase cards) from The First Chapter have held value well. The Elsa Enchanted (#207) in NM condition consistently trades above $120, well above its initial pack-pull value.
What Has Declined
- →Rise of the Floodborn sealed — Ravensburger overprinted this set significantly to meet demand. Booster boxes that retailed at $130 can be found for $90–$110 regularly.
- →Common and uncommon singles across all sets — buyer demand has normalized, and the market is flooded with these.
- →Set 3–5 singles (non-Enchanted) — the steep print run increase hurt prices. Expect these to remain soft unless a card breaks out as a competitive staple.
The Investment Thesis in 2025
Lorcana is not Pokémon. The nostalgia play is different — Disney IP is broad rather than deep, and the competitive community is smaller than MTG or Pokémon. That said, if Ravensburger corrects its print run strategy (as they appear to be doing with later sets), First Chapter and select Enchanted singles from early sets are a reasonable long-term hold.
Our view: buy First Chapter sealed if you find it under $180. Skip Rise of the Floodborn sealed. Hold any Enchanted rarity cards from sets 1–2 that are seeing competitive play.
