Graded Funko Pops: The Next Big Collectibles Market?
Pop Price Guide graded Funko Pops have hit record numbers. We look at whether graded vinyls are a legitimate investment or a speculative bubble.
Pop Price Guide (PPG) launched its Funko Pop grading service in 2020 and created something that didn't previously exist: a standardized grading system for vinyl figures. The market's response was immediate and significant. In 2024–2025, PPG-graded Pops are trading at multiples that would have seemed impossible five years ago.
Why Grading Changed Funko
Before PPG grading, Funko Pop collectibility was limited by the box condition problem: a Pop in its original box with a dented corner was technically inferior but had no standardized way to express that. PPG solved this with a 1–10 scale applied to both the figure and the box, creating two distinct valuations and a clear hierarchy.
The result: PPG 9+ graded Pops of rare vaulted figures now command 3–5× the premium of their ungraded equivalents in similar condition.
Which Pops Are Worth Grading / Buying Graded
- →Vaulted exclusives (GameStop, Hot Topic, SDCC) — the combination of limited original production and vault status creates genuine scarcity.
- →Early Pops (#1–50 in the main line) — these have age rarity plus collector demand.
- →Chase variants — 1-in-6 production ratio makes PPG 9+ chases scarce in a measurable way.
- →Convention exclusives (SDCC, NYCC) — particularly 2013–2017 convention Pops. Supply is finite and documentation (SDCC stamp, sticker) is verifiable.
The Bubble Risk
Funko has produced thousands of unique Pop figures. The majority of graded Pops are worth essentially nothing because they're common figures in high pop reports. The market for graded Pops is highly tiered: the top 1% of figures hold value; the rest do not. If you're buying graded Pops as investments, you must stick to verified scarce pieces.
Our honest assessment: graded Funko Pops are a legitimate niche within the broader collectibles market but require more research than trading cards. The barrier to entry for uninformed buyers is high. Buy from reputable dealers, check PPG's pop report, and focus on vaulted exclusives with low graded populations.
